Room Area Calculator

Calculate the total area of irregular or L-shaped rooms by breaking them into rectangular sections.

Settings

Room Sections

Break your room into rectangular sections. For an L-shaped room, use two rectangles. For more complex shapes, add as many sections as needed.

How It Works

Calculation Method

The room area calculator uses a simple decomposition approach:

  1. Divide the room into rectangular sections along natural boundaries (walls, corners, offsets)
  2. Measure the length and width of each section
  3. Calculate the area of each section: Area = Length × Width
  4. Sum all section areas for the total room area
Tips for Measuring Irregular Rooms
  • L-shaped rooms: Split into 2 rectangles at the inner corner
  • T-shaped rooms: Use 2 rectangles — the top bar and the stem
  • U-shaped rooms: Use 3 rectangles — left wing, bottom, and right wing
  • Alcoves and nooks: Add each recess as a separate small section
  • Closets: Measure and add as a separate section if you want to include them
Unit Conversions
  • 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m
  • 1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft
  • 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft
  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft
